I wanted to broaden my horizon for learning and be as prepared as I could for my future careers. In May 2022, I graduated Louisiana State University (LSU) with a dual-degree in Biological Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. I am currently continuing my education at Baylor College of Medicine’s (BCM) Biomedical Sciences and Health Equity (BSHEq) program. Below you can find relevant coursework for medical school, distinctions in progress, and selected works that highlight my communication skills.

A communication-intensive course I completed was KIN 4606: Introduction to Health Promotion. In this course, I learned about the different approaches on how to effectively promote wellness and health within an individual and community. This was personally my favorite class as a Kinesiology (Health Sciences) minor, as I did my final project centered around my baby cousin who passed away due to a lack of health promotion. In this assignment, I learned about the many aspects of what could entail in health promotion through in-depth research and in-class discussions. These aspects included but are not limited to: investors, target groups, issues at-hand, goals and objectives, intervention strategies, and the benefits to all parties.

A communication-intensive course I completed was KIN 4601: Community Health Issues. In this course, I learned about the many community health issues society faces and the different approaches on how to possibly reduce or resolve these problems. For example, the topics of obesity and COVID-19 were highly prevalent in group discussions as this was the first year back to campus since the Pandemic. There were insightful conversations regarding the impacts of quarantining on physical and mental health. In this assignment, I learned about the many aspects of what could entail in attempting to resolve the community health issue of childhood obesity. This was done through in-depth research, in-class discussions, and collaboration with.a partner. These aspects included but are not limited to: target groups, issues at-hand, realistic goals and objectives, proper recording, intervention strategies, and the benefits to all parties.

Distinguished Communicator ProgramIn the Spring of 2022, I successfully completed the requirements of the Distinguished Communicator program. This program helps students build and refine the necessary skills needed to excel at any job. Students take Communication Intensive (C-I) courses to improve their written, spoken, visual, and technological communication skills. I pursued this program because communication skills are important in all job prospects and because I want to strengthen my communication skills to become a better doctor.

Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher ProgramIn the Spring of 2022, I successfully completed the requirements of the Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Program. This program recognizes outstanding LSU undergraduates in their ability to excel in research activities in their discipline. Students participate in a track of educational and research opportunities to create a final presentation or publication of a faculty-mentored undergraduate scholarly project. I pursued this program because of my interest in research and to become a better student scientist for my future career endeavors.

LSU's UNST 3900 is the culmination of a student's study in the Interdisciplinary Studies program. This capstone course is characterized by a Senior project, the Final Integrative Reflection. The Final Integrative Reflection allows the student to represent important learning from his or her three minor fields of study, and to create new learning by an interdisciplinary re-imagining of a complex research problem to address.
The complex research problem I chose to address was providing medical efforts for disadvantaged student and families from low-income populations. This topic has been of great interest and passion to me. This Final Integrative Reflection has helped me create the foundation of my future plans in healthcare and the world of medicine. |
