Louisiana State University
MEDLIFE at LSUMEDLIFE at LSU is a non-profit organization that caters to providing medicine, education, and development to low-income families everywhere.
During my junior year, I was searching for clubs to join at LSU that catered to what I was passionate about - underrepresented communities. Unfortunately, I was not successful but this situation allowed me to continue thinking of what else I was able to do. Thus, on February 22, 2021, the idea for MEDLIFE at LSU came about. With the help of other LSU students who were just as passionate about the cause, we worked together to make this dream into a reality. MEDLIFE at LSU grew quickly with approximately 260 members today. We are proud to have raised hundreds of dollars for the MEDLIFE Movement and hurricane reliefs, as well as collected a plethora of donations for supply drives. With the help of our members and other supporters, we are hopeful of the success we have in store. To learn more about the service opportunities the club has partaken in, please find the "Service" section below. We are also appreciative to have been given a feature in the LSU Reveille regarding the organization's success. Read the article here to learn more. |

SCI Lead CouncilAt the beginning of my senior year, I was chosen to be a member of SCI Lead. SCI Lead is a student council within the LSU College of Science (Cos) that aims to assist students in developing their professional, leadership, and communication skills while advancing diversity and inclusion. Member of SCI Lead council are able to network, gain connections in the sciences, and interact on a personal level with students in the CoS. Throughout my time with this council, I was able to help plan and run events for the LSU and Baton Rouge community. One event we participated in was the College of Science Dean's Circle Science & Spirits where we did origami to create a the Louisiana state bird, the pelican, and demonstrated DNA extraction using strawberries. We continued to contribute to leadership training opportunities and outreach activities for our peers.
Kaplan Test PrepI love partaking in any opportunity that helps others towards their goals in life, and I became an LSU Kaplan Test Prep Student Brand Ambassador (SBA) to do just that. Being a Kaplan Test Prep SBA allowed me to help my peers with the appropriate testing preparation for their respective professional schooling such as the MCAT, LSAT, DAT, and many others. I was able to work with LSU organizations, club members, and other students to provide them with discounts and scholarships for test preparation. As an SBA, I gained more communication skills by presenting at Club Talks and having monthly meetings with the executive board of organizations. I also created content to advertise Kaplan Test Prep products. My time being an LSU Kaplan Test Prep Student Brand Ambassador has helped me develop and strengthen my communication, leadership, and marketing skills.

LSU Discover Undergraduate Research AmbassadorsAs an LSU Discover Undergraduate Research Ambassador, I had the responsibility with my fellow ambassadors to assist the program in supporting student participation in faculty-mentored research and professional activities. We offered a wide-range of help for students wanting to become involved in undergraduate research, such as tips in finding a mentor or events to learn more about undergraduate research. The LSU Discover Undergraduate Research Program ambassadors hosted an information fair for students to learn more about research opportunities from other undergraduate researchers. Students were able to walk around tables and learn more about research from each respective College.
LSU SCI-1001 Peer MentorThe LSU SCI-1001 elective assist incoming freshmen in becoming a scientist by developing writing and analytical communication skills. During my junior year, I became an LSU SCI-1001 peer mentor to grow my leadership and communication skills with other college students. It was also a great opportunity to connect with these first year students and help them in their transition to college, as I personally struggled and was able to bestow tips and tricks to taking on LSU as a S.T.E.M. major. Being a SCI-1001 peer mentor for two years allowed me to interact with students on the academic level and connect with them on a more personable level. SCI-1001 peer mentors have numerous other responsibilities such as modeling positive student behavior, motivating student engagement, and encouraging a healthy scientific community.

LSU-1001 Project WinnerDuring my freshmen year in LSU-1001, now known as SCI-1001, we were to do a final project which involved advertising anything within the College of Science or the sciences. My group included myself, Blake Clouatre, Zoë Bertrand, and Salvatore Camarda. Our final project centered around a modernized advertisement for the LSU Horseshoe dorms Highland Hall and Louise Garig Hall. Zoë and Blake created the script, Salvatore filmed the video on his professional camera, and I edited the video using iMovie and. In iMovie, I was able to appropriately cut the clips, add filters and captions, and edit the transitions and audio. The audio was the trickiest part of the editing process as I diligently researched how to add background music and did so using an online Youtube-MP3 converter. As a result, the video was a success as my group's project was the selected winner for 1st place.
I was able to take my skills gained in LSU-1001 and integrate them into SCI-1001 as a peer mentor, where the students in my group placed 2nd for their final project on climate change. Their video was also used as the example video during Peer Mentor orientation. Check out their video here. |

Houston Food BankAs graduate students of Baylor College of Medicine, my cohort and I partook in a service learning activity at the Houston Food Bank on July 29, 2022. We sorted out different meals for disaster relief and completed the 4 hours of service by preparing over 22,000 meals. The Houston Food Bank workers even noted that our group was one of the fastest volunteers they have had.
On August 22, 2022, a group of my classmates and I shopped for the Houston residents and packaged 250 meals as well as at least 250 bags of produce. Geaux Big Baton RougeGeaux Big Baton Rouge is LSU's largest annual service event that aims to unite LSU students with the Baton Rouge community through service. As a member of MEDLIFE at LSU, I participated with other LSU organizations and Baton Rouge natives on April 17, 2020. At our specific location, we worked to remake approximately 160 paint cans for Habitat for Humanity. The stations we participated in dealt with prying open paint cans, mixing the paints, and combining the paints into buckets for future reuse.

Homeless Run Salesians of Service (SOS) New Orleans is an organization composed of young adults serving their community and spreading the Salesian spirit. Service projects are completed once a month, with some of these being feeding the homeless, visiting the elderly, rebuilding and painting houses, or helping local schools. A homeless run that I participated in dealt with feeding the homeless in the Greater New Orleans area. I was able to help pass out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that the group had made, cups of Chick-Fil-A soup donated by an employee, as well as join many of the homeless in prayer if given permission. It was amazing to hear about the different life stories and see the effects of our act of kindness.
